UPDATE: Went to the MDWFP commission meeting this morning. With the full support of Larry Castle (head of the Fisheries and Parks) the amendment to allow the running of rabbit dogs during the spring turkey season at night passed today unanimously! They also waved the $5 registration fee associated with it. I stood beside Larry in answering some of the Commissions questions about rabbit training at night. There was some confusion about hunting vs running and a few other things but we cleared it up.
I would like for the Rabbit Hunters of the State of Mississippi to email or write Larry and tell him, "Thank You" for stepping up for us rabbit hunters/beaglers. The National Turkey Federation was there and totally opposed the addition of rabbit dogs to the already established coon dogs during turkey season but with Larry's support and the clear record of the program so far it passed! As soon as the minutes are posted on the MDWFP site I'll post them here!
I'll have to dig a little to find Larry's email but I think it would a great gesture for us to reconize Larry stepping up for us. Like I said, the National Wild Turkey Federation was there and strongly oppossed it but Larry stood on the side that was right today!
Here are the two I've found: Larry Castle larryc@mdwfp.state.ms.us and Larry Castle Castlela@aol.com
